NXTUS, Inc., the Kansas Department of Commerce, and KU Innovation Park announced Tommy McAndrew with SippTech of Wichita, Kansas, as the winner of the newly doubled $50,000 grand prize at the Gamechangers & Champions 2026 Pitch Competition. The event welcomed more than 280 attendees and showcased some of the most promising startup companies across Kansas.
The original $25,000 prize was sponsored by the University of Kansas School of Business. During his morning address at the event, Kansas Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland surprised attendees by announcing that the Kansas Department of Commerce – Office of Innovation would double the competition’s grand prize to $50,000 and would commit an additional $25,000 to be distributed among the finalists.
Thanks to that commitment, the runner-up, Ashley McClellan with MedCurate, received $10,000, while the remaining Final Four participants, Kalin Baca with Icorium and Barry Nelson with VisiPay LLC, each received $3,500. The remaining Kansas startups that participated in the Innovative Eight were each awarded $1,500.
In addition to those prizes, Frankie Elder-Reedy with WRAX of Pleasanton, Kansas, won the Fan’s Choice Award. Originally funded by the Barton School of Business at Wichita State University, the extra Kansas Department of Commerce funding doubled that award to $5,000.
The competition began with an initial pool of 75 startup companies, which advanced through several competitive rounds. Startups were first narrowed to 32 through online judging of one-minute pitches and slide decks, then to 16. Judges then selected the Innovative Eight through additional online judging ahead of the live event. During the morning session, the Innovative Eight delivered live one-minute pitches. Throughout the day, the eight were evaluated by regional venture capital leaders, who selected the final four. Judges noted the strength of the competition, with each startup demonstrating strong innovation and growth potential.
