The future of work with AI: Insights from Paul Allen

The future of work is rapidly evolving. Paul Allen, founder of Ancestry.com and Soar AI, provided his vision for artificial intelligence during a recent lunch and learn session at KU Innovation Park. Highlighting both challenges and opportunities, Allen explored how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping industries, workplaces and society.

Productivity Redefined

AI has the potential to increase global productivity dramatically. Allen shared his optimism about the “pie getting bigger” as AI tools automate repetitive tasks, allowing human creativity to shine. However, he emphasized that the benefits of this increased productivity must be distributed equitably.

Drawing parallels to the invention of the steam engine and the term “horsepower,” Allen suggested the need for new metrics to measure AI’s labor-replacement capabilities. He proposed terms like “mind power” and “task force” to quantify AI’s impact on cognitive and physical tasks.

“Get major productivity gains by understanding what your people do and giving them training and dollars to invest in the latest, greatest AI,” Allen said. “I think when people become super productive, they will be needed for a long time to come.”

AI as a Partner, Not a Replacement

While some fear job displacement, Allen believes AI can augment human abilities rather than replace them. He sees a future where humans work alongside AI, guiding its use to achieve greater results. “It’s important for people to find their passion, their gifts, their mission in life, their purpose and then give them the best tools possible,” Allen said. “The future of work, the highest profitable companies, will be utilizing AI and robots, but also human intelligence.” He stressed the importance of equipping workers with the tools and training needed to thrive in an AI-enhanced world.

The Human Element

Amidst the technological transformation, Allen underscored the irreplaceable value of human qualities like empathy, creativity and purpose. He pointed to opportunities for new roles, such as “ethics coaches” for AI and talent spotters who align natural human gifts with AI capabilities.

Allen’s insights also touched on the critical need for balance. He advocated for technologies that empower individuals rather than centralize control, fostering environments where AI enhances rather than erodes human connections and purpose.

A Collaborative Future

The takeaway? AI is not a threat but a tool to be embraced responsibly. By blending AI with human intelligence, businesses and individuals can unlock unprecedented opportunities for growth and innovation.
