MASTER THE SBIR/STTR PROCESS
The Park is hosting a free SBIR/STTR boot camp on July 24-25 to help entrepreneurs and researchers master the federal funding process. Applications are due by Friday, July 11.
Why it matters: SBIR and STTR grants are critical sources of early-stage capital—and landing one is often a turning point for startups.
To qualify for SBIR/STTR funding, a business must:
- Be a for-profit entity with a business location in the United States.
- Have no more than 500 employees, including affiliates.
- Be more than 50% directly owned and controlled by U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

ICYMI: KU Innovation Park’s $136.5M impact
A recent independent study reveals that KU Innovation Park is driving real economic growth, generating $136.5 million between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023.
By the numbers: The total impact comes from four areas: operations, construction, startup companies, and established businesses.
- Established companies utilizing KU and Park resources had the largest impact, at $116.9 million. Startups added $9.9 million in income.
- Final touches were being put on the Park’s Phase III graduate facility, leading to a net impact of $8.5 million.

Go global at July’s lunch and learn
This month’s lunch and learn at the Park will explore how startups can tap into export opportunities and expand into global markets.
The details: The experienced crew from Kansas Commerce’s international division will share how to compete and succeed on the global stage.
- The event is on Thursday, July 31.
- Lunch and networking begin at 11:45 a.m., with the presentation starting at 12 p.m.

Calling all Jayhawk entrepreneurs! If your tech or bioscience startup is ready to raise, the Oread Angel Investors network is looking for you.
Call for companies: The Oread Angels support early-stage companies in tech and bioscience with high-growth potential, particularly those with a connection to the University of Kansas. Companies should have a strong value proposition, a significant market opportunity and a dedicated management team.
How to apply: Visit the Oread Angels website and click “Ready to Raise?” Use the platform to apply, and if selected, we’ll reach out with opportunities to pitch to qualified angels later this year. Since its founding, network members have invested over $700,000 in KU-affiliated startups.
