Changes ahead for SBIT/STTR?
SBIR/STTR programs have an expiration date – September 30, 2025. Last month, the INNOVATE Act was introduced by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), which would extend the program for three years. But not without some adjustments.
- SSTI – the State Science & Technology Institute – breaks down a lot of the proposed changes on their blog.
- Both programs use America’s Seed Fund, through the National Science Foundation, to help small businesses develop technology and move toward commercialization.
- There are a lot of questions about what’s happening at the NSF, as well. Here’s how the agency is implementing recent executive orders.
The team at the Park is trying its best to stay on top of the changes happening. If you need help or guidance, reach out directly to a staff member or send us an email.
Optimism Among Entrepreneurs
While federal research dollars are in limbo, that hasn’t dampened the entrepreneurial spirit. Last fall, Techstars surveyed a cohort of founders about their journey.
- Despite the significant demands that accompany entrepreneurship, 89% of founders reported positive expectations for their startup’s future.
- Most founders also revealed that mentorship played a fundamental part in their success.
- The survey also discovered that AI is top of mind for entrepreneurs. But if patents are in the mix, founders need to be aware of the implications of AI and IP, a topic at a recent lunch and learn at the Park.
